Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium Complex

New Delhi

Client: Central Public Works Department
Master Planner & Architect: Consulting Engineering Services CES
Area: 100.00 Acres
Status: Completed in 2010

Spread over nearly 100 acres, this site originally used for the 1982 Asiad Games, required extensive upgrades and a renewed master plan to accommodate two additional indoor stadiums—one for wrestling and the other, a velodrome—for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The project demanded intense coordination to cater to the expected large number of spectators and overlapping user groups while preserving approximately 1,000 mature trees on-site. This made it a challenging yet immensely rewarding endeavor.

Urban plazas were carefully designed to integrate with the random placement of existing trees, creating shaded pockets and adding a labyrinthine green element to the paved walkways. Key features of the designed landscape include the sweeping central pedestrian spine, a celebratory central plaza, robust detailing, and the use of colored pavers to enhance the ceremonial atmosphere.
